Fuerteventura

Long sandy beaches, rugged nature, and picturesque villages, this is what you will find on Fuerteventura. Just over 122,000 people live on the island, with nearly 40,000 in the capital, Puerto del Rosario. Fuerteventura has its own unique character. Of all the Canary Islands, it is the most barren and bizarre. Not every visitor will discover the charm of this island, but once someone has fallen for it, they return time and again. Fuerteventura doesn't have as many attractions as the neighboring island of Lanzarote; it primarily attracts water sports enthusiasts and beach vacationers. The southern part of the island is a surfer's paradise, and surfers also find great spots in the north at Punta Blanca.

The Port

The cruise port is located in the north of the island, in Puerto del Rosario, the capital of the island. The cruise ships dock at the Muelle de Cruceros, as seen in the picture above. If two ships are in the harbor at the same time, the large pier is also used. You won't find a dedicated cruise terminal here; instead, car rental and scooter rental services are located in containers. A small wooden house serves as the office for the taxi service. The capital begins right at the harbor exit, making it easily accessible on foot. There is a small sandy beach to the left as you leave the harbor.

on foot

Puerto del Rosario is small and easy to navigate, and the town can be explored comfortably on foot. However, it doesn’t really offer much in terms of attractions, so we would always recommend taking a trip around the island. For those simply looking for a nice beach, it’s not far. A short walk to the left from the pier will lead you to the small town beach.

public transportation

The bus network in Fuerteventura is well developed. The bus company Thiadhe has a good website that is also available in English. There, you can see the routes and payment options; typically, payment is made in cash to the driver.

The bus station is located on Av. Diego Miller, about a kilometer away from the harbor. It takes approximately 20 minutes to walk there.

For cruise ship passengers, the bus line 6 to the north towards Corralejo is definitely interesting. There, you can either visit the dunes or simply enjoy a lovely day at the beach. Depending on how many cruise passengers are traveling, the capacity of the buses can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to allow enough time for your return to the ship in case you need to take the next bus.

rental car

A rental car is a great way to explore Fuerteventura. With some rental companies, you have the option to pick up the car at the cruise port. The containers at the pier serve as the office, and the cars are parked about 200 meters to the north of the pier. Cicar is the most well-known provider in the Canary Islands and offers this service; we have used Cicar several times during our vacations in the Canaries and were always very satisfied. Additionally, there are companies like Top Car and Plus Car. It is advisable to reserve the car in advance, as availability can quickly become limited. There may be queues when picking up the cars, so you should bring a little patience.

taxi

The taxis are waiting at the end of the pier, and the office is a small wooden house. A large sign displays the prices for excursions; those who know what they want to see pay €25 per hour, and waiting times are charged at €15. On the website of the taxi company association, you can view the routes, and prices are available upon request.
